DIRECTOR OF ARTISTIC PROGRAMME

Salary £58,000 (Part-time £46,400 pro rata for 4 days per week)

This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional individual to help shape the future of one of London’s iconic theatres. We are seeking a Director of Artistic Programme to work in partnership with the Executive Director to create an engaging, inspiring, and eclectic programme of entertainment for our audiences. We have created these two new leadership roles to take Hackney Empire forward following the renewal of funding from Arts Council England as a National Portfolio Organisation from 2018.

Hackney Empire is a Grade 2* listed building situated at the heart of the Town Hall Square:  it’s a special theatre in a special place reflecting both local and global communities of artists and audiences. We aim to present and create work that is inspirational, inclusive, and extraordinary in its ambition.

Hackney Empire has a turnover of £3 million, employs 24 permanent staff and is a registered charity.

The Director of Artistic Programme will create with the Programme Team an enterprising, entertaining and ambitious programme of work for this 1300 seat theatre. There are opportunities to grow new work and partnerships as producer/co-producer or director as well as expanding many of our existing relationships with a diverse range of promoters and organisations. Working alongside the Executive Director the Director of Artistic Programme has the exciting opportunity to establish a strongly acclaimed programme for this important theatre.

The ideal candidate will be an entrepreneurial creative known and respected in the wider cultural sector and capable of jointly representing Hackney Empire in a range of funding and political scenarios.

The Executive Director creates an environment in which the vision of Hackney Empire can prosper. This role oversees organisational and financial planning, management, reporting and facilitates the work of senior staff fostering leadership and collaboration in the Senior Management Team in partnership with the Director of Artistic Programme.

The ideal candidate will be an exceptional business leader known and respected in the wider cultural sector and capable of jointly representing Hackney Empire in a range of funding and political scenarios. The post-holder will have management experience in a comparable environment.
