The Handan Dream 25 - 27 Jan 7.30pm

The Guangzhou Dramatic Arts Centre presents a bold new production of one of China’s most beloved dramas, Tang Xianzu’s The Handan Dream. The show will be in the lead up Chinese News Year.

Performed in Mandarin with English surtitles and with strikingly colourful costumes by one of the lead costume designers on the Beijing Olympic Opening Ceremony, The Handan Dream began life in Guangzhou and has been performed at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, as well as touring internationally.

Combining bold design with drama, stagecraft and symbolism, this contemporary telling of a classic Chinese play is the story of a man who dreams an entire life only to wake up in the inn where he started.

In ancient China the height of ambition was to pass the imperial examinations and serve the nation. Lu, our dejected protagonist has tried and failed the exams three times. On his way home Lu stops at an inn, and whilst waiting to be served his food falls into a deep sleep, where he dreams of an entire well-spent life.

From studying for exams, falling in love, getting married, having children, being slandered and condemned to death, Lu eventually is cleared of all charges and grows slowly into old age. Just as his food is about to be ready the young man wakes, only to realise it was nothing but a dream.
