Boasting one of the richest orchestrations in opera, fully staged productions of Béla Bartók’s – Bluebeard’s Castle are comparatively rare. This single performance at Hackney Empire will use the full orchestration of over 70 players conducted by Peter Eötvös. The musical and emotional impact of the piece will be experienced as never before when the theatre’s stalls area become an orchestra pit and the Empire’s wonderful acoustic carries the sound throughout the auditorium.
Dark and harrowing, Béla Bartók’s rarely performed Bluebeard’s Castle follows lovers Judith and Bluebeard as they arrive into Bluebeard’s castle. Judith desperately wants to figure out the hidden secrets of her new husband’s soul, but the more she discovers the closer the pair are pulled towards eternal loneliness.
Eötvös’ own piece Senza Sangue (Without Blood) is also an amazing display of orchestral virtuosity, created to be performed prior to Bluebeard’s Castle. Set in the aftermath of civil war, this explosive psychothriller follows an unnamed man and woman as they try to find meaning in their past trauma.
