This introduction to directing will teach you the process of making theatre in the role of director.
Have a creative vision you want to bring to life? In this weekly workshop, our industry professionals will guide you through what directing is and how to do it.
Week 1 – The Director and the Theatre
This session is about the role of the Director. We will think about what the possibilities of theatre are and what the key collaborative relationships are when making theatre.
Week 2 – The Director and the Actor
We will direct Actors in short scenes and think about how to get the best out of the Actors we’re collaborating with to help us learn about the relationship between the Director and the Actor.
Week 3 – The Director and the Text
We will look at how to mine a text to release every layer and possibility to see how we can bring that text to life creatively.
Week 4 – The Director and the Space
This session is about how Directors use and respond to space. We will look at the how Directors can use space in extraordinary ways and what sites can offer us creatively. Co-facilitated with a Designer.
Week 5 – The Director and the Story
This session is about the relationship between the Director and the Writer and how stories work. We will look at how we work with Writers and explore the dramaturgical role of a Director. Co-facilitated with a Writer.
Week 6 – The Director and the Audience
This extended session will see participants create a ten-minute performance in response to a stimulus. Harnessing the tools learnt through the course, Directors will make a short piece of work in just one day that will perform to an invited audience at the end of the day.
