“You know if things really did change, you wouldn’t be able to blame your problems on me”
It’s 2019 and young people in cities all over the world are tired of being told how to think, how to feel and how to behave.
Following a tragic incident at a local house party, a group of young people have to deal with the effects of one person’s actions on an entire community. Full of anger and with no way to vent it, they feel powerless to create change. When the local Youth Centre is shut down, so are our young people’s hopes and aspirations for the future. This is the beginning of their story, here in The Ends…..
Hackney Empire’s Artist Development programme (ADP) will see 52 young performers aged 13-19 compose, write, choreograph and perform ‘Calm’ – an exhilarating piece of original musical theatre on Hackney Empire’s main stage with just two weeks to prepare.
This year’s summer programme is part of the theatre’s Creative Futures programme and explores the notion of defining your own story and will tackle issues important to young people.
The company will include actors, singers, dancers, musicians, rappers and writers, they will work alongside top professionals to produce a new work for Hackney Empire’s main stage. They will be joined by writer/actress Nicôle Lecky Superhoe – The Royal Court Theatre, Ackley Bridge – Channel 4, The Lyric, Soho Theatre, BBC Radio 3), Stella Odunlami (The National Theatre, Barbican, Almeida Theatre), and Yamin Choudury (Artistic Director – Hackney Empire), plus Boy Blue’s Olivia Shouler and vocal coach and session musician Ty Lowe.
First started in 2000, ADP develops the next generation of young artists. Every year, these two weeks of intensive support and guidance have helped hundreds of young performers get into the arts industry, with many of them returning as mentors to help the next generation finesse their talents.
So come and support the next generation of artists here at Hackney and hear the voices of the future!
