An estimated 65 million people throughout the world have been forced to flee their homes. Of these, 19.5 million have been granted refugee status.
That means that 42,500 people were forced to leave their homes every day because of conflict or persecution.
There are an estimated 118,995 refugees living in the UK. That’s just 0.18 per cent of the total population (65.1 million people).
50% of refugees around the world are under the age of 18.
Famous refugees include Rita Ora, Freddie Mercury, Albert Einstein, Alek Wek and the Dalai Lama.
Over a two week period, a company of 40 young artists, including actors, singers, dancers, musicians and writers, have explored the experiences of refugees, using this as the inspiration to write, create and perform their exciting piece of original musical theatre, No Place Like Home.
Now in its 17th year, Hackney Empire’s Artistic Development Programme (ADP) celebrates the next generation of young artists. Participants have worked with theatre director Susie McKenna and a team of top professionals to produce a new work for Hackney Empire’s main stage.
So come and support the next generation of artists at Hackney Empire, and experience the voice of the future.
